Places to stay in Tyne and Wear

Newcastle upon Tyne: The city of Newcastle upon Tyne stands on the north bank of the Tyne Gorge, facing its smaller neighbour Gateshead on the opposite side of the river. The people of Newcastle are technally 'Novocastrians' but are more popularly known as 'Geordies'. The original settlement of 'Pons Aelius' was founded by the Roman Emperor Hadrian at the lowest point on the River Tyne that a bridge could be built. Hadrian's Wall dating from AD122, was built to defend the Roman Empire from the barbarians to the north. The vast stone structure stretched from the Solway Firth to Wallsend and parts of the wall can still be seen in places in the city

Washington: Washington is a town in the City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear. Historically part of County Durham, it joined a new county in 1974 with the creation of Tyne and Wear. Washington is located geographically at an equal distance from the centres of Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland, hence it has close ties to all three cities.

Gateshead: Gateshead is a town in Tyne and Wear and is the main settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. It lies on the southern bank of the River Tyne opposite Newcastle upon Tyne and together they form the urban core of Tyneside. Gateshead town centre and Newcastle City Centre are joined by seven different bridges across the Tyne, including the landmark Gateshead Millennium Bridge. The town is becoming increasingly well known for several examples of iconic architecture such as The Sage Gateshead, the Angel of the North and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. Gateshead is set to host BBC Radio 3's Free Thinking festival

Boldon: The Boldons are a group of three small villages in the North East of England - East Boldon, West Boldon and Boldon Colliery - bordering the north of Sunderland and the south of South Shields and Jarrow.
