Places to stay in Merseyside

Liverpool: Liverpool. The very name conjures up images of a glorious maritime history, world-beating musical heritage, two of the Premiership’s biggest football teams and not one, but two majestically different Cathedrals. This Northwest city and the surrounding City Region is certainly all those things, but it is also so much more. It is now bulging with fabulous new shops, has buzzing new restaurants, hip hotels and trendy wine bars, as well as a world class cultural offering with more museums and galleries anywhere outside of London. Not forgetting its inhabitants, of course, who are famously friendly and will welcome you with pride

Wirral: Situated to the north of Chester, the Wirral is a narrow peninsular which separates the River Dee estuary from that of the River Mersey. Neighbouring Liverpool can be reached by the Queensway underground tunnel, which was opened by King George V on the 18 July 1934, in honour of his wife, Queen Mary. The Kingsway Tunnel was later opened in 1971 by Queen Elizabeth II.

Wallasey: The name of Wallasey originates from the Germanic word Walha, meaning stranger or foreigner, which is also the origin of the name Wales. Originally the higher ground now occupied by Wallasey was separated from the rest of Wirral by the creek known as Wallasey Pool, the marshy areas of Bidston Moss and Leasowe, and sand dunes along the coast.

Southport: Southport is a seaside town within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, in Merseyside. The demonym of Southport is Sandgrounder.

Birkenhead: Birkenhead is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in Merseyside. It is on the Wirral Peninsula, along the west bank of the River Mersey, opposite the city of Liverpool. Historically part of Cheshire, Birkenhead is perhaps best known as a centre for ship building, as a seaport and its related industries.
