Places to stay in Essex

Colchester: In AD77 a Roman writer by the name of Pliny the Elder described the location of the Isle of Anglesey as being 'about 200 miles from Camulodunum, a town in Britain'. This was the Roman name for Colchester and is the earliest known reference to a fixed settlement in Britain, hence the claim to be Britain's oldest recorded town.

Southend-on-Sea: Southend-on-Sea is a seaside resort in Essex. The district has Borough status, and comprises the towns of Chalkwell, Eastwood, Leigh-on-Sea, Prittlewell, Shoeburyness, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay, and Westcliff-on-Sea. The district is situated within the Thames Gateway on the north side of the Thames estuary 40 miles east of central London. It is bordered to the north by Rochford and to the west by Castle Point.

Clacton-on-Sea: Clacton-on-Sea is a seaside resort that attracted many tourists in the summer months between the 1950s and 1970s, but which like many other British sea-side resorts went into decline as a holiday destination since holidays abroad became more affordable.

Chelmsford: Chelmsford is the county town of Essex and the principal settlement of the borough of Chelmsford. It is located in the London commuter belt, approximately 32 miles north east of Charing Cross, London, and approximately the same distance from the once provincial Roman capital at Colchester.

Ilford: Ilford is a large suburban town in northeast London and the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Redbridge. It is located 9. 1 miles northeast of Charing Cross and is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan.
